Please note that this post contains spoilers for The Dark Knight.
First off let me say that I haven’t seen the film since it was in theaters, so it is quite possible that some of my points may be incorrect. That being said…
I know I’m in the minority here, but I honestly didn’t like TDK that much. I felt that the film was bloated, uneven, and underdeveloped.
Dent’s story felt incomplete, like it should have been its own separate film. Plus his transformation into Two-Face felt forced to me. I know he has been severally burned, but why does that abruptly transform him into a sociopathic madman? Again, it’s been awhile since I watched the film, but I don’t recall any scenes that showed Dent to have mental problems or homicidal urges.
Also, the way Batman dispatches with Two-Face was disappointing. The film goes through all the trouble of showing Dent as a good person in contrast to the monster he will become, but then when he actually becomes Two-Face, he’s killed off pretty much immediately.
Also, while I’m on the subject of killing, why does Batman spare the Joker and then kill Dent? When he spares Joker, doesn’t he say something to him about how he’s not like Joker, and how he’s better and doesn’t kill or something?
Why is Lucius Fox so bothered by Batman’s tracking device? He didn’t seem to have a problem helping build all this other crap that Batman uses to take the law into his own hands. Why is he so disturbed by the fact that Batman can listen in on cell phone calls?
Yes, Heath Ledger is great in this movie; yes, he deserved an Oscar (for Brokeback Mountain, not TDK). My problem with the Joker isn’t Ledger’s performance, but the way the Joker commits his crimes. He’s too good at committing crimes, almost to the point of being cartoonish. I think the website Movie Plot Holes sums it up better than I can:
"The Joker's plan is beyond human. He knows Batman is gonna save Harvey so he shoots a bazooka in the direction of Harvey's vehicle because he knows Batman is gonna jump out of nowhere to intercept the shot. He knows how quick Batman is and how a-little-less-quick the police is so that he can send Batman to save Harvey and send the police to fail to save Rachel. And worst of all, he knows that a police officer will stay with him INSIDE his prison cell so that he can take him hostage and eventually kill everyone. If the police officer was not retarded, he would have been watching him from outside the cell, from the other side of the mirror-window."
And I still don’t understand why there were fat Batmen running around. Or what happened at Wayne’s mansion when the Joker broke in looking for Dent. And why the Scarecrow in the film for like 5 mins? I know Batman movies have a habit of having him face off against multiple villains, but if I remember correctly, he had nothing to do with the plot.
I didn’t hate the film. And I only watched it once, so I might enjoy it more on repeat viewings. Overall I would say that I enjoyed it, but it’s definitely not one of my personal favorites.
